Ciudad (pob., est. 2001: 490.000 hab.), capital de la provincia de Gomel en el sudeste de Belarús.

Conocida inicialmente como Gomy en 1142 AD, en el s. XIV pasó a Lituania y más tarde a Polonia. En 1772 fue adquirida por Rusia. A fines del s. XIX se convirtió en un importante nudo ferroviario, hecho que contribuyó a su desarrollo industrial. La ciudad, ubicada a orillas del río Soz, es un puerto importante y posee conexiones fluviales con ciudades ribereñas del río Dniéper. También es un centro industrial.
